M-TAC: A Different Way to Step Onto the Long Range

M-TAC is new for 2026, and while it runs alongside our Freedom Benchrest matches, it’s not Benchrest. It’s its own format. We’ll shoot it on the same days, after the Tactical class wraps up, so it fits naturally into the flow of a match day without changing what’s already working.
Benchrest is a disciplined, detail-driven sport. It takes time, experience, and in many cases, equipment that’s been built specifically for that purpose. That’s part of what makes it great, but it can also make it feel like a high bar to step over.
It’s built for the shooter who already has a good rifle and has been wondering what it might do at 600 yards. It’s for the person who’s been meaning to try long-range shooting, but hasn’t quite found the right place to start.
You don’t need a specialized setup to get involved. If you’ve got a solid rifle and know how to handle it safely, you’re most of the way there.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Bolt-action or semi-automatic rifles are both welcome
No weight restrictions
Caliber is limited to .308 and under
Rifles must feed from a proper magazine
Bipods, sandbags, or front rests are all acceptable
Suppressors and muzzle brakes are allowed
In other words, we’re talking about practical equipment, what a lot of folks already have in the safe.
The format itself is straightforward. Each shooter fires four targets per match, and scoring keeps things competitive without getting overly complicated:
One point for showing up and shooting
One point for smallest group (aggregate)
One point for highest score (aggregate)
One point for overall performance
There’s also a little incentive built in. Match winners take home a cash payout based on participation, and at the end of the season, the top overall shooter will earn a $500 prize.
Fees are in line with Benchrest: $35 for members, $45 for non-members.
M-TAC gives people a place to start. It gives experienced shooters something new to work at. And it gives us another way to bring folks onto the long range without lowering the standards that matter: safety, respect for the sport, and a willingness to learn.
If you’ve been curious about long-range shooting, this is a good year to act on it. If you know someone who’s been on the fence, bring them along.
